Cardinal Singers win more top prizes in international competition

The University of Louisville Cardinal Singers choral group continues to dominate world competition and received top honors this month at three events in Germany: June 24, 2011
  • Harmonie Festival, Lindenholzhausen, June 2–6. First prize: mixed choir; second prize: women’s choir; third prize: men’s choir; German Chancellor’s award for the highest points achieved in the group’s performance hall; and special prize for the outstanding interpretation of a work of classical polyphony for a performance of “Sanctus” from Tomas Luis de Victoria’s “Missa de profunctis.”
  • 12th International Marktoberdorf Chamber Choir Competition, Marktoberdorf, June 10-15. Second prize overall and the Gustave Charlier-Anna Maroye Prize for the best interpretation of a religious choral work for a performance of “Salve Regina” by British composer Herbert Howells.
  • Ninth International Choral Days, Mainhausen, June 17–19. Overall prize for most points in any category (the singers achieved it in the jazz category); first place: male choir and jazz choir; and second place: mixed choir.

“The Cardinal Singers are wonderful ambassadors not only for UofL, but also for Kentucky and the United States. They have quite a following overseas, and they continue to make us proud,” said UofL President Ramsey.

Kent Hatteberg directs the Cardinal Singers. The group’s next concert in Louisville is a joint performance with University Chorus and Collegiate Chorale scheduled for Sept. 11 in Margaret Comstock Concert Hall, School of Music.
