Conference to raise awareness, encourage action to end human trafficking

Many Americans think that human trafficking is something that happens only overseas. But a University of Louisville student group hopes that its upcoming conference teaches people that the issue has local implications. January 6, 2012

The Women 4 Women Student Chapter wants to raise awareness about this modern-day slavery and encourage students and the public to become involved in efforts to make other people aware of the problem and to help stop it. The Human Trafficking Conference will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Red Barn, on UofL’s Belknap Campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

Speakers include:

  • Anthony Talbott, co-founder of Abolition Ohio and a member of the Ohio Attorney General's Trafficking in Persons Study Commission. Talbott has discussed human trafficking in the media and has given many presentations on human trafficking to students in the Ohio area. He will talk about domestic trafficking in the region.
  • Robin Malony, president of UofL’s Cards 4 Freedom, will discuss domestic trafficking of minors and trafficking in the Louisville area.
  • Gabrielle Maxedon, former president of the Women 4 Women Student Chapter, will discuss how students and the general public can get involved to end human trafficking.
