Conversations With Champions to host D. Wayne Lukas

The thrills, challenges and future of horseracing will be among the topics discussed Nov. 18 during a University of Louisville Conversations With Champions event with thoroughbred trainer D. Wayne Lukas. October 23, 2013

Horses trained by Lukas have won the Kentucky Derby four times, the Preakness Stakes six times and the Belmont Stakes four times. He is a horse racing Hall of Fame inductee and among the most well-known and successful trainers in the world. His horses have amassed more than $100 million in winnings.

The free, public discussion begins at 7 p.m. in Horn Auditorium, College of Business, Belknap Campus. The program will be moderated by sports journalist, author and adjunct faculty member Billy Reed.

Conversations With Champions was launched earlier this year by the College of Education and Human Development’s Sport Administration department and focuses on sports industry ethics.

“Wayne Lukas is the most innovative trainer in thoroughbred history,” said Reed. “He also has the most incredible work ethic I've ever seen. I'd like to get at what makes him tick and ask about things such as how he hires people, how he motivates them, how he recruits clients, the importance of ethics and what changes he would like to see happen to make the sport better.”

The event is free but reservations are required at uoflconversationswithchampions.com/tickets.php. Free parking available in the lot between the College of Business and School of Music. The event is co-sponsored by the Equine Business program, College of Business.
