Dentistry provides care in Tennessee through RAM
University of Louisville dental students, faculty and alumni volunteered Jan. 22 -23 to give free dental care to patients in Oneida, Tenn. — marking the fifth year the school has worked with Remote Area Medical (RAM) to help people in need. January 26, 2011Nearly a dozen students and seven faculty/alumni traveled south to the small town near the Kentucky state line in East Tennessee to offer patients teeth cleanings, extractions, fillings, denture repairs and realignments.
Bill Collins, DMD, UofL gratis-faculty and alumnus said that despite the freezing temperatures, people began lining up Friday night, and some slept in their cars waiting for care.
The UofL group helped provide 1,239 extractions, 172 fillings, 58 cleanings and 31 exams.
Even more dental students plan to travel to Pikeville, Ky. in June for a similar effort. The school has helped with the Pikeville RAM since its inception in 2008.
