Farmers' market opening on Belknap Campus
Golden beets. Raspberries. Cinnamon rolls. Those are just some of the goodies expected to be on sale at the first full-fledged farmers’ market on the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus. May 20, 2014The Health Sciences Center campus has had a popular market since 2009. The new market will give faculty, staff, students and residents in the neighborhood of the main Belknap campus a chance to buy fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables closer to their offices and homes.
Around a dozen local vendors have signed up for the weekly market, which will operate from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays starting May 29. They’ll set up their stands along Brandeis Avenue between Third and Fourth streets just north of The Ville Grille.
Market organizers are lining up live music, giveaways and more for a June 5 official grand opening ceremony, said Mitchell Payne, UofL senior associate vice president for business affairs.
Shoppers can buy fruits, vegetables, cheese, meat, eggs, honey, popcorn, jams and jellies, tea, baked goods, crafts, vegetarian meals and more at the market, which will continue through October.
Some of the market’s merchants will accept debit cards, although shoppers should bring cash initially to be on the safe side, Payne said.
“We’re excited to offer this opportunity for our students, faculty, staff and neighbors,” he said. “It’s a great next step in our ongoing efforts to make local, healthy food available to those in our campus community.”
Three groups that advocate healthy eating plan to have representatives at the market, including UofL’s Get Healthy Now program, the Nutrition Navigator student health initiative and Real Food Challenge, a national campaign to encourage sustainable eating on college campuses.
