Fundraiser aims to fund fireworks for kids dealing with cancer

A team of 30 University of Louisville students hopes to give youngsters battling cancer a few extra “oohs” and “aahs” this summer. March 26, 2015

The college students—all part of a sport administration class in the College of Education and Human Development—are organizing a golf scramble April 13 in the hopes of raising $5,000 for summer fireworks at Camp Quality Kentuckiana, a nonprofit organization that strives to let kids with cancer be kids again.

The event kicks off with a putting contest at 8:40 a.m. at UofL’s Golf Course Club, 401 Champions Way, Simpsonville.

“This is the 18th year for our Cardinal Classic Golf Scramble and it’s amazing how much the students can learn by planning this major fundraiser,” said Chris Greenwell, who teaches the class. “They learn strategic planning, marketing and event management and then use those skills to positively impact our community.”

Stephen Fairley, a first-year graduate student and tournament director said he hopes to get students highly engaged with the charity.

“Camp Quality Kentuckiana will receive not only monetary donations from the Cardinal Classic but also volunteer time from our sport administration students,” Fairley said.

The cost to participate in the scramble is $110 for a single player and $400 for a foursome and includes all greens fees, breakfast, lunch and an opportunity to participate in a silent auction. To register, donate or learn more, see http://spadclassic.weebly.com or call Fairley at 574-309-4130.
