Law symposium to address legal role in #MeToo movement Feb. 9

February 5, 2018

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law will delve into the protections the law offers for victims of sexual assault and sexual harassment with the half-day symposium “From #MeToo to #NowWhat: The Role of Law in Responding to the #MeToo Social Media Campaign.”

The #MeToo social movement began in 1996 and has recently gained momentum, becoming a way for victims of sexual harassment and assault to raise awareness and share their stories.

The symposium will be 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at the Brandeis School of Law, Room 275.

The symposium is free and open to the public.

Legal experts, scholars and activists will discuss how the #MeToo movement has brought about social change, how the law can assist with those changes to better protect victims and what can be done outside the law to keep the movement going.

The keynote speaker is Mary Anne Franks, a national expert on online abuse and discrimination. Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear will deliver opening remarks.

Other speakers include Brandeis School of Law faculty JoAnne Sweeny, Ariana Levinson and Dan Canon.
