Nominations open through April 15 for Gold Standard Award for Optimal Aging

January 19, 2017

The Institute for Sustainable Health & Optimal Aging at the University of Louisville will again recognize older adults living life to the fullest with the sixth annual Gold Standard Award for Optimal Aging. Nominations for the award are now open through April 15.

This award program celebrates and honors older adults who embody the institute’s vision for a world where all older adults flourish. This award recognizes adults 85 years or older who are outstanding models of optimal aging in the following four categories: physical, social, spiritual and creative. Multiple award winners will be named at a luncheon on Sept. 8.

“The Gold Standard Award for Optimal Aging is a special event that demonstrates the importance of appreciating the contribution of persons of all ages in our community,” Christian Furman, M.D., medical director of the institute, said. “The Gold Standard Award for Optimal Aging celebrates not only the lifetime achievements but also the continuing contribution of older adults. Furthermore, this award is one of the cornerstone events of Optimal Aging Month - a month dedicated to promoting the view that aging is an opportunity, not a disease.”

Nominees and awardees demonstrate that while aging optimally looks different for every person, the sprit of optimal aging is something everyone can strive for, Anna Faul, Ph.D., executive director of the institute, said. “Optimal aging is the ability to flourish throughout one’s lifespan. It is not a specific level of achievement but rather a state in which a person is able to continue living life to its fullest.”

The Sept. 8 luncheon will be held at the Crowne Plaza, 830 Phillips Lane. Professor Emeritus in Geriatrics and retired chair of the Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine at UofL James G. O’Brien, M.D., will be the keynote speaker for this year’s award luncheon.

Lunch reservations are $35 per person and $350 for a table of 10. A variety of sponsorships are currently available. For sponsorship and reservation information, call 502-852-5629 or email OptimalAging@louisville.edu.
