Sociologist to lecture about ‘wrongs of the right’

Sociologist and author Matthew Hughey will discuss his view that race is embedded and leveraged within the U.S. political system and politicians’ word choices during his Sept. 16 lecture at UofL.

His free, public talk -- “The Wrongs of the Right: Language, Race and the Republican Party in the Age of Obama” – will begin at 4 p.m. in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library. A book-signing session will follow. The University of Connecticut associate professor, who is co-author of a book by the same title, will explore ways that conservative politicians have used racial issues throughout Barack Obama’s presidency. Hughey’s other books include “The Obamas and a (Post) Racial America?” “White Bound: Nationalists, Antiracists and the Shared Meanings of Race,” “The White Savior Film: Content, Critics and Consumption” and “Race and Ethnicity in Secret and Exclusive Social Orders: Blood and Shadow.” The Pan-African studies department, Center on Race and Inequality and Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research are offering the event as part of Project Progress, a five-year UofL initiative focusing on activities and the aftermath of the 1960s U.S. civil rights movement.
