Swope gives $1 million to UofL

Louisville businessman Sam Swope presented President James Ramsey with a check for $1 million in June. July 6, 2012

“The University of Louisville is such an important part of this community that I’m just grateful to be a small part of supporting it,” Swope said at the time.

Swope graduated from Ohio State University and moved to Elizabethtown in 1951. He built a large, successful dealership there before moving to Louisville in 1961 and developing Sam Swope Auto Group.

“This is a generous gift from a generous man” Ramsey said.  “Sam’s love for UofL and the people of Louisville clearly knows no bounds.”

Swope has been a strong supporter of Kosair Charities, Boy Scouts, Masonic Homes and other Louisville-area nonprofit groups.

His $1 million gift to UofL is undesignated and the university will spend it on top priorities.
