TWO U OF L GRAD STUDENTS RECEIVE SIGMA XI GRANTS

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Two University of Louisville graduate students have received research funding from the prestigious scientific research society Sigma Xi.

They are Hyun Kwon of Taejon, Korea, a Ph.D. candidate in chemical engineering, and Bing Wu, of Wuhan City, China, a Ph. D. candidate in experimental psychology.

Kwon received $1,000 to support a study that involves monitoring a blood protein in the heart as a way to predict heart attacks. She is conducting the research under the supervision of faculty member Kyung Kang in U of L's chemical engineering department.

Wu received $350 to support a study that uses virtual reality to determine how texture affects the way people judge distance. He is working under the supervision of faculty member Zijiang He in U of L's psychology and brain sciences department.

Sigma Xi, founded in 1886, is a worldwide non-profit society with a membership of nearly 75,000 research scientists and engineers. The organization awards small grants each year on a highly competitive basis to promising young scientists. This year, less than a fourth of about 1,100 applicants for the awards received full or partial funding.
