UofL to host Veteran Symposium for Higher Education Feb. 20-21

Representatives from higher education will gather in Louisville Feb. 20-21 at the fourth annual Veteran Symposium for Higher Education to look at how universities can become more veteran-friendly. February 3, 2012

The University of Louisville-hosted national symposium brings in speakers and guests from across the country. This year’s event will be at the Brown Hotel.

The symposium came from an effort to look at how offices across universities accommodate student veterans, said Tom Jackson, UofL’s vice president for student affairs. “We’ve carved out a very narrow niche. We’re looking at the best practices on how to serve veterans on all of our campuses.”

This year’s session topics include communications and retention strategies, creating environments for veterans and transition assistance. Presenters are from Kent State, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, Syracuse and Mississippi State universities; the universities of South Florida, Pennsylvania and Kentucky; and the American Council on Education and New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities.

UofL hosted the first veteran symposium in February 2009. More than 100 participants are expected to attend this year as more universities look for ways to better serve the student veteran population.

Registration for the two-day conference is $199 per person and will continue through Feb. 10
