UofL offering plenty of options to mark Earth Day 2016

Want to celebrate Earth Day 2016? UofL students, faculty and staff have plenty of options: April 15 to May 2 – Collection bins will be set up in the lobbies of all UofL residence halls for students to donate unwanted items as the school year nears its end: Clothing, shoes, accessories, linens, appliances, lamps, electronics, décor, rugs, schools supplies, bags, toiletries, cleaning supplies and non-perishable food items will be accepted. Food items will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul; all other items will be donated to Goodwill. April 20 – Sustainable Gardening Workshop, 2 to 3 p.m. Learn how to grow and maintain a sustainable garden from Justin Mog, UofL assistant to the provost for sustainability initiatives. Also on hand will be The Food Literacy Project with their Truck Farm, a mobile demonstration garden. Garden Commons, located behind the Cultural Center, features raised-bed and in-ground bed gardens, a small orchard, berry bushes, an herb spiral, compost bins, a greenhouse, a Hugelkultur mound and rain collection barrels. April 22 – Lighten Your Load (on the Earth) Free Swap, Red Barn, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Help UofL achieve our goal of zero waste for Move-Out 2016. Donate or take items at this annual event. Anything not claimed at the end of the event is donated to Goodwill. Event includes free food and a DJ. April 17 and 24 – UofL Community Composting Volunteer Days, noon to 1 p.m., 200 block of E. Bloom St. Help out at UofL’s community composting operation.
