Women's Day event to focus on campus diversity

UofL organizers hope an International Women’s Day event will draw attention to campus diversity and help people overcome social stigmas against other cultures through talks, performance and a workshop. March 6, 2013

The free, public event will be 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 8, in Room 201 of Miller Information Technology Center, Belknap Campus.

Here’s the schedule:

  • Food will be served. 11:30 a.m.–noon.
  • Aaisha Hamid, a Pakistani American Muslim student, will sing a children’s song and speak on the significance of the head scarf. Women from Bosnia, Syria, Pakistan and India will model different scarf styles. Noon–12:30 p.m.
  • Discussion on Hinduism in India and America and a performance by the UofL Indian Student Association. 12:30 p.m.–1 p.m.
  • Performance and workshop by Kelly Creagh, a belly dancing instructor. 1 p.m.–2 p.m.

Each year around the world, thousands of events are held worldwide to commemorate International Women's Day and mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. The national theme of International Women’s Day is “The Gender Agenda:  Gaining Momentum.”

The UofL event is co-sponsored by the UofL Women’s Center, Commission on the Status of Women, The Cultural Center, Vice Provost for Diversity and International Affairs and the Women 4 Women student group.
