Lecturer to discuss the ‘social network’ of beauty

November 9, 2015

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but artistic achievement relies on a shared response. Philosopher Dominic McIver Lopes will discuss “Beauty, the Social Network” in a Nov. 20 lecture at the University of Louisville.

The free, public talk is the American Philosophical Association lecture, given by an association board member in conjunction with the APA annual meeting, which is at UofL this year. Lopes is secretary-treasurer of the APA’s Pacific division. His lecture will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Ekstrom Library’s Chao Auditorium with a reception afterward. The APA and UofL’s philosophy and fine arts departments are sponsors. Lopes is distinguished university scholar and philosophy professor at the University of British Columbia, where he is a member of the UBC aesthetics group. His research focuses on pictorial representation and perception, theories of art and its value, aesthetic value, and interactive computer art and new art forms. He is a 2015 Guggenheim fellow and a former National Humanities Center fellow. Lopes is past president of the American Society for Aesthetics and a member of several journal editorial boards as well as co-editor of the “New Directions in Aesthetics” book series. His books include “Beyond Art,” “Sight and Sensibility: Evaluating Pictures” and “Understanding Pictures.” For more information, contact David Owen at 502-852-0448 ordavid.owen@louisville.edu.
