UofL honors legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with films, play and community service

The University of Louisville will honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with documentary films, a play and service to the community.

Free, public events

• Jan. 13 - “Children of the Civil Rights,” a documentary film about Oklahoma City youngsters and their activism prior to the Civil Rights Act. Louisville NAACP chapter President Raoul Cunningham will lead a discussion after the film. Show begins at 5 p.m., Cultural Center, 120 E. Brandeis Ave.
• Jan. 14 – “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin,” a film about Rustin’s passion for nonviolence and social change. The matinee movie starts at 11:30 a.m., Cultural Center.
• Jan. 18 –presentation of a three-character piece with music, theater and dance by UofL’s African American Theatre Program that portrays the staff of Martin Luther King Jr. as they try to decipher his message through bits of paper smuggled out of the Birmingham jail. Play begins at 1 p.m., The Playhouse, 1911 S. Third St.

Faculty, staff and students also will take part in a MLK Day of Service, an annual event in which the campus community provides service to local nonprofits. More than 250 volunteers are expected to provide assistance to over a dozen organizations. For details on the event, contact Pam Curtis at 502-314-6646.
